What is LIHEAP Action Day?

LIHEAP Action Day is an important advocacy event where energy assistance leaders and supporters come together to secure funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Held annually in Washington, D.C., participants meet with members of Congress and their staff to share the impact LIHEAP has on their communities and stress the importance of continued support.

By raising awareness of how LIHEAP helps millions of vulnerable households afford energy costs, the event highlights its role in preventing utility disconnections and promoting energy efficiency. These efforts ensure that families in need have access to essential services during extreme weather conditions.

Whether you’re a NEUAC member or not, LIHEAP Action Day provides a platform to make your voice heard. By advocating for sustained funding, you help protect a lifeline that supports low-income families across the nation.

Why is LIHEAP Important?

LIHEAP helps low-income households afford their energy bills, providing critical support for heating during the winter and cooling in the summer. For families facing financial hardship, LIHEAP ensures access to essential services, preventing them from falling into energy poverty.

One of the key benefits of LIHEAP is preventing utility disconnections, which can be life-threatening during extreme weather conditions. Vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and people with disabilities rely on these services for their safety and well-being.

Without adequate funding, millions of families could be left without access to basic heating and cooling, increasing their risk of energy insecurity. LIHEAP funding is essential to ensure that no family has to choose between staying safe and affording other basic needs.
